Two Heads Are Better than One: Collaborations in the Tasmanian Cultural Sector

Presented by Linda Jacobs

Physical isolation, a rich colonial history, and a strong sense of pride in our environment make Tasmania an exciting source for archival records.

The smallest of the Australian states, Tasmania has a widely disbursed population with four major population centres, Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport. Physical separation from the mainland and its role as Australia’s chief sea link to Antarctica are further defining elements of this unique state. Reflecting this, travel and distance feature strongly in the National Archive's Tasmanian collection with records relating to railways, shipping, immigration, Antarctic exploration and lighthouse management well represented.

This paper will discuss the development of Tasmania’s rich cultural histor, and how opportunities for collaboration in the local cultural sector are nurtured and developed.

We will explore the collaborative experience in Tasmania, discussing the role of the Joint Tasmanian Archives Consultative Forum, the achievements of the Tasmanian Cultural Collection Sector forum and the Hobart Office’s approach to public programs such as participation in the Antarctic Tasmania Midwinter Festival. We will also highlight other exciting local initiatives in the cultural sector such as Arts Tasmania's Roving Curator program and the State Library's e-Heritage service.
