SIGASMT has a membership of about 75 individuals and organisations and
was established in the early 1980s by Colin Smith who was then the
CSIRO Archivist. In recent times the convenor of the group has been Gavan McCarthy, Director at the Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre.
The group meets each year at the ASA Annual Conference and organises
other meetings and conferences as circumstances permit. Members receive
the History of Australian Science Newsletter. Special newsletters and
communications are sent to members as required. One aim of the group is
to maintain contact with similar groups and interested individuals
overseas, especially with the Sci-Tech Health Care Roundtable of the
Society of American Archivists which has a membership of about 180. The
group also maintains links with the museum world through liaison with
the Health and Medicine Museums section of the Museums Association of
Australia.
