The Annual History Lecture: Voices in the Street

John Laws, arguably Australia’s most successful talkback radio host, labelled his program and genre ‘dial-in democracy’. If biography and ‘history from below’ are about ‘faces in the street’, then the Australian media is, and has been, at least in part, about voices from the street.

In this lecture, Associate Professor Bridget Griffen-Foley considers how voices of ‘the people’ have been heard in Australian print media, led by the Bulletin, since the nineteenth century, and on Australian radio since the 1920s.

When: Friday 3 September, 6:00pm
