This paper explores recordkeeping legislation in a New Zealand context. The paper examines how legislation affects government agencies and considers what implications and challenges this presents. The paper also poses two important questions: should we be concerned and is the best way to handle legislative changes a back to basics approach?
An overview of the main legislation that impacts on recordkeeping is discussed first along with the author’s own experience of working at the coalface and what some of the key reactions to legislation have been. Taking a working at the coalface perspective, the paper explores what have been some of the key implications resulting from the main legislation and the challenges that fall out of this. In discussing the implications of recordkeeping legislation and its effect on agencies there are some points of concern. Finally ideas on how we can go forward to ensure we mitigate some of the issues raised in this paper are touched on.
