The ASA is working to develop a suite of continuing professional development opportunities aimed at serving the needs of its members while they work in an environment of changing expectations and changing technology. Initial research on the issues involved and member preferences was reported at the 2006 conference.
The ASA encourages its members to deepen their professional knowledge and to participate in educational activities outside their work roles. The ASA publishes information on seminars and workshops on topics of interest to practitioners in the Bulletin and via the ASA website.
Members are entitled to discounted rates at all educational events organised by the ASA. Branchs and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) hold events for members, people working in related professions and the wider community. Branch and SIG meetings and other activities provide opportunities for networking and getting to know more about the archives profession locally and further afield.
The ASA holds an annual conference with associated events. The conference provides an opportunity to hear papers on current professional issues and reports from Australian and international speakers. It also provides a chance to travel, as the venue is different each year.
Newer members may be interested in attending ASA introductory workshops. They may also be interested in participating in the ASA's Mentor Scheme. Archives and Manuscripts, the ASA's professional journal, publishes scholarly articles, book and conference reviews and reports of professional activities, in and beyond the Australian scene. If you are planning or wishing to host a seminar or workshop, the ASA has guidelines on various aspects of planning and organising events.
