Business Archives as Chameleons: Aligning a Bank Archive with Risk Management

Presented by Kirsty McClea

Banks archives, and their archivists, are anomalies within the financial world and this is reflected by the inconsistent placement of the archives by each New Zealand bank. The Bank of New Zealand Archivist works within the Marketing and Business Development business unit, the Westpac Archivist works in the Legal Department while I work in Risk Management. For the ANZ Archives survival has meant `selling’ the archives’ role to management as an integral part of the bank’s risk governance function. This has involved a major realignment of functional fit by moving the role from Vendor Management to Risk Management. It has also involved transforming the unit from a dusty pseudo-museum to a business archives that is aligned with the risk appetite of the organisation.

The bank’s archives have also, at times, had to play second fiddle to my other role as the ANZ National Bank’s Records Manager. The records management role has gained high visibility. This papers looks at the positive process undertaken to cement the Archives role in Risk Management as well as reviewing the negative impacts this has had on the position.
