The Franciscan Friars are a worldwide Religious Order in the Catholic Church, established in Australia since 1879. Since then they have extensively expanded their religious activities and ministries in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia.
The Franciscan Archives are located at the Provincial Office in Waverley (Sydney) and are well resourced with a heritage collection display attached. The facility was extensively refurbished and expanded in 2003 under the direction of the previous professional religious archivist. The Archives holds records and memorabilia relating to the history and work of the friars, as well as current administrative records. The Archives and Heritage Collection are approximately 80% catalogued and preserved.
A position exists for a qualified archivist with knowledge of best practice archival systems. The appointee to this role will be responsible for administering the historical records as well as capturing the current work of the Provincial Office and the life and ministry of the Franciscan Order in Australia and Oceania. The Province Archivist is immediately responsible to the Secretary of the Province.
The Provincial Archivist should be a person with the appropriate educational and professional qualifications, with energy and creativity, discretion and confidentiality, good communication skills and an easy ability to work with others who form the administration and secretarial team at the Provincial Office. Experience and/or understanding of Catholic Church life and structures will be helpful.
