Conference alerts

The Perth conference committee will post regular alerts about the progress of the 2008 conference in Perth:

February 2008

Since the last Conference alert the ASA Conference Perth 2008 Committee has been very busy with activities such as appointing a Professional Conference Organiser, securing a quote for audiovisual for the Conference, finalizing accommodation deals with several Perth hotels, discussing the welcome function, planning strategies for sponsorship, etc. It is envisaged that a Registration brochure and form will be available online via the ASA website by early March. This will give details about early bird registration and suggestions about accommodation.

Our aim as a Conference Committee was to have a Conference that blends Australasian and international experiences of Archives. In light of this, the Conference Committee is very excited by the potential quality of the Program. We received a plethora of proposals for papers and it was a very hard task formulating a program. Themes relating to Digital Archives and 'Archives and Identity' are strongly represented in the 'Sneak Preview' ASA Conference Program, which was posted, along with one for ICHORA4, ASA Website and on Aus-archivists.

While this is not the final version of the program, it was provided to give a flavour of what the final program will look like, and to also assist potential attendees, especially those from overseas who necessarily require longer lead times, to plan their journeys to Perth.

The current version of the draft program can be found at:

http://www.archivists.org.au/2008-conference-perth

The ICHORA4 program is located at:

http://www.archivists.org.au/ichora/ICHORA4/index.html

There were many paper proposals from international sources for the ASA Conference and those who have been accepted for inclusion on the Conference Program include:

Jeannette Bastian - Simmons College, USA
Amanda Engineer - The Wellcome Trust, UK
Andrew Flinn - University College London, UK
Lars-Erik Hansen and Roger Lofgren - Social Insurance Administration - Sweden
Lekoko Kenosi - Botswana/South Africa and University of Pittsburgh
Erik Ketelaar - Netherlands and Monash University
Tom Nesmith - University of Manitoba - Canada
Darwin Stapleton - Rockefeller Archive Center, New York, USA
John Tuck - Digital Lives Project, British Library, UK

And there are others.

Of course Australian and New Zealand speakers will be presenting at the
Conference and we will high-lighting some of these in the next ASA Conference Alert.

Very Best Wishes

January 2008

Last month we alerted aus-archivists that the Organising Committee of
the next ASA Conference will be publicising the Perth 2008 Conference
through Aus-Archivists (as well as other appropriate communication
environments).

In our first 'Alert' we talked about the Parmelia Hilton Hotel (Mill
Street, Perth), as the venue of the Conference, introduced the
Conference Committee, promoted ICHORA4 which will be held at the
University of WA on 3-5 August (see
http://www.archivists.org.au/ichora/ICHORA4/index.html
) before the ASA
Conference and discussed the Call for Papers which closed on 14
December.

On behalf of the Conference Committee I'd like thank everyone who has
proposed papers for the Conference. There was a large number received
and we are developing what we believe is an outstanding program for the
Conference. Archivists and Recordkeepers from throughout Australasia and
also from around the world have proposed papers. This is very pleasing
given the 'outward' emphasis in the Conference's Exploration and
Discovery themes. We trust we will have the program finalized by the end
of the month and acceptances of paper proposals will be confirmed
directly to authors by email soon after this.

We also thank those who submitted proposals for pre-conference
activities and are busily securing appropriate rooms/venues for these.

The Conference Committee is also working on things like accommodation
options, a draft program to highlight some of the excellent paper
proposals, a social and tour program, etc. More about this in the next
Alert.

Relevant webpages (http://www.archivists.org.au/2008-conference-perth)
on the ASA website will also be updated soon with information about the
Conference.

'Happy New Year' from the ASA Conference Perth 2008 Committee.

We look forward to seeing you at the ASA Conference in Perth in August.

Kind Regards
