Australian Society of Archivists Inc Governance and Management Review
The ASA Council recognises that its current governance and management arrangements are not sustainable in the longer-term. Over the past 30 years the ASA has grown from strength to strength. Much of the Society's achievements have been made possible through the efforts of many volunteers. While many continue to volunteer for the Society there is simply too much work for too few hands.The Society also faces many structural issues as the rules and by-laws have not kept pace with changes in the external environment. Changes within tertiary education have resulted in our membership categories not closely aligning with qualifications and coursework available within Australia, changing employment; and work patterns for archivists means our code of ethics and membership criteria are a hindrance to attracting and retaining members. In this context increasing demands and expectations of members and stakeholders exceed our capacity to act in a timely, efficient and consistent way and satisfy members and ensure we always deliver the best outcome for the ASA.
As a consequence of these and other factors the ASA Council have initiated a governance and management review.
Purpose of the Review
The strategic goals of the review are to:
- Modernise and strengthen our governance and management;
- Improve accountability throughout the organisation;
- Establish the most appropriate legal structure for our organisation; and
- Establish the basis for becoming a more proactive professional body.
Specifically, we seek to improve our governance and management so we may:
- Increase and retain our members
- Increase our revenue
- Operate more efficiently
- Be more accountable
- Operate under simple, clearer and more relevant rules
- Reduce reliance on voluntary labour and other resources
- Deliver better value to our members
- Raise the ASA’s profile and relevance within the community
